There is a question Dr. Cora Betko is asked again and again, and she answers it with an honest no. Why precisely this answer builds trust says a lot about the way she treats.

## The story

### IThe honest answer

The question usually comes once the first major treatment is over, and every time it sounds like relief:

“Is the one treatment enough? Is it cured now?”

The answer everyone hopes for would be yes. Cora Betko does not give it, because it would be wrong. “Periodontitis is a chronic disease,” she says then, “just like diabetes or rheumatism.” And right after that comes the news that takes the fright away again: it can very much be brought to a standstill, with very good oral hygiene at home, regular prophylaxis and check-ups at the practice. Just not with a single appointment.

Anyone who has understood this once no longer looks for a quick repair, but for a doctor for the long haul. That is exactly what Cora Betko has geared her work towards: she specialises in advanced periodontitis, that is, in the cases where the survival of individual teeth is already at stake and a treatment plan has to carry over years, not weeks.

> “Perhaps that I have two brothers, twelve years younger, who are also studying dentistry?”

### IIA family affair

It is her answer to the survey question of what would surprise patients about her, and it says more about this working life than she is probably aware of: two brothers, both twelve years younger, both currently studying dentistry. For the Betkos, dentistry is evidently not a job but a family theme.

Within it, she has staked out her own territory clearly. Long-term, aesthetic tooth preservation is her declared goal, and the phrase is precisely built: preserve, long-term, and in a way that looks good. Alongside periodontology, her second specialisation is therefore aesthetic gum corrections, the work on the contour and shape of the gingiva. Because the gums are the frame in which every smile hangs, and a frame can carry a picture or rob it of its effect.

### IIIEye to eye

How much depends on tone and attitude with her becomes clear at the first appointment. She makes a point of greeting her patients as equals, no one should feel talked down to, and she relies on a warm voice, calm and empathy until a pounding heart turns into a feeling of being in safe hands. With a disease that needs support over years, that is not a nicety but part of the therapy: people only come back to where they feel well looked after.

What her patients never see: how much is coordinated for them behind the scenes. Between the practice's specialties the paths are short; appointments and sequences are planned so that treatments interlock instead of being months apart; every specialisation works hand in hand with the next. This exchange does not end when the working day does, coordination continues afterwards too. The long haul, behind the scenes as well.

## The craft

- **Per·i·o·don·ti·tis, noun Periodontology** — The bacterial inflammation of the periodontium, that is, the gums and the bone that support the tooth. It runs a chronic course and often goes unnoticed for a long time; untreated, the bone recedes until firm teeth become loose. Dr. Betko specialises in advanced cases, in other words those in which the survival of individual teeth is already at stake. Managed consistently, the disease can be brought to a standstill, and that is precisely how she measures her work: by teeth of your own that stay.
- **SPT, noun Aftercare** — Short for supportive periodontal therapy: the steady rhythm of professional cleaning, checking the gum pockets and fine-tuning home care that follows every periodontitis treatment. Because the disease is chronic, success depends less on the individual procedure than on the care in the years that follow. With Dr. Betko, this long haul is part of the concept from the start: anyone in her care always has a plan for afterwards as well.
- **Pink aes·thet·ics, noun Gums** — This is what dentistry calls the aesthetics of the gums, as opposed to the white aesthetics of the teeth. The contour, fullness and symmetry of the gingiva frame every smile; an uneven gum line or exposed tooth necks change its effect even when the teeth are flawless. Aesthetic gum corrections reshape this frame deliberately. For Dr. Betko, both registers belong together: healthy gums and a smile that is framed just right.

## From the consultation room

### Is a single periodontitis treatment enough?

Unfortunately not, and I prefer to say so honestly: periodontitis is a chronic disease, just like diabetes or rheumatism. It is not cured by a one-off treatment. But together we can bring it to a standstill: with very good oral hygiene at home and regular prophylaxis and check-ups with us at the practice. This aftercare essentially accompanies you for life, and I will not leave you alone with it.
