Before Adike Yilmaz attended her first dentistry lecture, she had already qualified as a nurse and spent four years working in a Berlin intensive care unit. Paths like this are rare in dentistry. What it means for her patients comes down to a single question.

## The story

### IThe question of all questions

It comes before the first examination, sometimes already on the phone, and it consists of three words:

“Will it hurt?”

Asked about the question patients ask most often, Adike Yilmaz writes down exactly this one. Her answer does not begin with reassurance but with a standard: “We place great importance on treatment that is as pain-free as possible.” The “we” is to be taken literally: it is the standard of the practice.

Her second sentence is her own. What she does when patients sit in the chair with their heart pounding: “I explain every single step in detail.” That sounds unspectacular, and it is not. Fear of the dentist is to a large extent fear of the unknown; anyone who knows beforehand what is about to happen does not have to imagine it.

The calm behind these answers does not come from the lecture hall. It comes from an earlier working life.

> “I make sure the mood is good.”

### IINight shifts and lectures

In 2008, Adike Yilmaz begins her nursing training at the St. Gertrauden-Franziskus nursing school in Berlin; three years later she passes her exam. Four years in the intensive care unit of St. Gertrauden-Krankenhaus follow. Intensive care means: the hospital's most serious cases, life-support technology, shift work including nights, people in their most anxious hours.

In 2014, still alongside her ward work, she enrols in dentistry at Charité; in July 2023 she passes the dental licensing examination, her second qualification. Then the mandatory programme for every young dentist: two years as a foundation dentist, first at the MVZ Zahnkultur in Berlin-Köpenick, then in a Berlin group practice.

Anyone who reads her answers in the practice survey, brief and precise like a nursing record, finds two concerns in them: that no one is treated without being informed, and that no one has to endure anything unnecessarily. They are the principles she once started out with, at the bedside.

### IIICalm as a craft

Since 2026, Adike Yilmaz has been one of the Tooth and Face Specialists at F80. She brought with her what no lecture hall teaches: a calm that comes from experience, and the certainty that fear is never a side issue. The Welcome Lounge, the headphones at the chair, the explanation before every step: for her, these are not amenities but tools that turn a dreaded appointment into a good one.

She describes her own role in the shortest answer of the entire survey: making sure the mood is good. That is no platitude. In nursing she learned that a good mood does not arise by itself; someone creates it, with attentiveness, with a friendly word at the right moment, with reliability. She has brought that task with her to Friedrichstraße.

## The craft

- **In·ten·sive care u·nit, noun Nursing** — The hospital ward where the most serious cases are treated: round-the-clock monitoring, life-support technology, nursing in shifts around the clock. Adike Yilmaz worked there for four years as a qualified nurse at St. Gertrauden-Krankenhaus before studying dentistry. For her patients this means: at the chair stands a dentist who knows medicine not only from the lecture hall, but from years at the bedside.
- **Foun·da·tion den·tist, noun Dentistry** — The two-year professional phase after the dental licensing examination, during which young dentists treat patients under the guidance of experienced colleagues before they may work independently within the statutory health insurance system. Adike Yilmaz completed these two years in two Berlin MVZ practices. Anyone who has been through them knows everyday practice not from courses, but from two years of daily treatment.
- **In·formed con·sent, noun Treatment** — The detailed conversation before and during treatment: what is being done, why, and what it will feel like. Legally, informing the patient is a duty; for Adike Yilmaz it is a method. “I explain every single step in detail” is her answer to the question of how she meets patients whose hearts are pounding. Anyone who knows every step before it happens is not startled halfway through; together with her standard of treatment that is as pain-free as possible, it is her tool against the fear of the appointment.

## From the consultation room

### Does it hurt?

That is the question I hear most often, and I take it seriously. We place great importance on treatment that is as pain-free as possible. And I explain every step in detail: you know beforehand what is about to happen, why it is necessary and what you might feel. Nothing happens by surprise, and nothing happens over your head.
